Atelophobia is the fear of not being good enough. In this series Mustafa looks at the fears that shape life in Somaliland today: letting down his family, losing sight of his goals, and the self-censorship that tradition, social custom and a semi-authoritarian political climate push people into. He made the work before the 2024 elections, unsure whether artists would be free to speak and share their work afterwards. The staged photographs use black and white and his own drawings to show the pull between fear and the wish to break free. The series asks the viewer to accept doubt, and an unfinished self, as part of becoming who you are.
